Reading: We wrapped up our unit right before conferences, and we spent this week enjoying some independent reading. We also have done some informational reading. We are incorporating our inquiry unit into our reading block. We have learned about mechanical, electrical, and light energy. Next week we will continue learning about types of energy: thermal and sound. I have been working on progress monitoring students as well, and I bet some of them are eager to tell you their new reading level!
Writing:
Since we are in between units right now, we have been enjoying some creative writing. We will be working on conventions and grammar next week as well. We wrote some Halloween stories this week, and we even used Emojis to tell a story. It has been a week filled with creative writing! I know that the class LOVES getting to polish their creative sides.
Math:
We are moving right along in our new math unit. We established new math groups this week, and we have been refreshing our memories on area and perimeter. This is a great way to remind students of a skill they learned last year, and also it helps them warm up their multiplication skills. I introduced a new math website this week, like I mentioned at conferences. It is an excellent site to help students get faster at those facts. I will send home that information today as well.
Inquiry:
We are diving into How We Express Ourselves. We did a pre-assessment sort to see what we knew about the types of energy: mechanical, electrical, light, thermal, and sound (M.E.L.T.S). We read about mechanical, electrical, and light. We even got to build catapults to show how they related to mechanical energy. Next week will wrap up the different types of energy with other activities.
