Reading: We started our new unit on Monday. We are growing our understanding of non-fiction and how to read it well. We have spent time reading a wide variety of nonfiction. Today, we learned about text structures (chronological, cause and effect, etc), and we searched in our books for that while we read. We have been using our reading block to read some nonfiction but also balancing it with fiction reading. Our vocabulary for this week is a nice tie into this unit. Most students should know these, but it a nice reminder about the formatting of nonfiction!
Writing: We will be beginning our lessons about nonfiction writing next week. This week we took a pre-assessment to see what knowledge we have about how to write nonfiction. I know the students are eager to start next week. When we return from Winter Break, students will begin writing about natural disasters!
Math: We are moving right along in our math unit. We have been working on division for the last couple of weeks. While it has been challenging for us, we have kept pushing through. We have talked about a variety of strategies to help us understand better. I have been trying to send home long division practice to help students get a little more in, but it is not required. As I mentioned last week, the more students practice this skill the better they will get!
Inquiry: We started our new unit on Monday. Our current unit is “How the World Works.” Our central idea is “People use scientific knowledge to respond to the changing Earth.” We started the week out with a provocation. We emptied a natural disaster emergency kit (courtesy of Mrs. Hauser). Without knowing what it was, we made observations of the various items. Many students picked up on that it was used for survival, and after some additional context realized it was a natural disaster kit. We did a picture sort of various natural disasters and watched some videos while taking notes. I know many students are very excited about this unit!
