Writing:
We are well on our way through our drafts of our realistic fiction unit. Some have even started publishing their stories. We are working hard on our leads and endings to make sure we hook our readers and end strong. We have started working on editing and revising. We will be getting into the heart of revision next week, and we will discuss how to effectively peer edit. We will have our stories finished for parent-teacher conferences!
Reading:
We are wrapping up our realistic fiction unit for reading. This week was mostly working on independent reading and a few mini-lessons. We are getting great at writing about our reading. On Thursday, we talked about developing complex ideas while we are reading. I was so impressed with our awesome inquirers and thinkers! Our ideas were grounded in deep thought and some included evidence from the text. We will be assessing our progress the week of conferences.
Math:
Last week we took our mid-module assessment on place value. While some of us knocked it out of the park, others set new goals for the remaining part of the unit. We graded the assessment together, and we talked about each problem. This allowed students to see any mistakes they made (many of which were not reading the directions carefully) to help them through the rest of the unit. We worked on multi-digit addition and subtraction with carrying and borrowing. We will be wrapping this unit up and assessing just in time for conferences.
Inquiry:
Today we finished our first unit of inquiry! This week we finished our collages that we started last week, and we went on our gallery walk in Mr. Blanc and Mrs. Hauser’s classrooms while they visited our room. We were able to read about other students’ values, cultures, and communities. Today we reflected on how individuals bring their own personal backgrounds to a community of learners. We will begin our new unit on Monday!
Our next unit is How We Express Ourselves, and our central idea is People innovate using creativity and knowledge of energy. We will launch this unit with a provocation. I am excited to announce that SCRAP PDX will be visiting us Monday afternoon. Students will be encouraged to show their innovative side by using recycled items. It will be a terrific way to start this unit.
