Writing:
We have been writing like crazy. Students are well into the writing process, and we are learning how to really make our writing the best it can be. We are learning to show not tell, making sure our readers know what is happening in the story, and revise while we write. We are making so much progress in our writing. We are approaching the publishing stage of our writing.
Reading:
Our realistic fiction unit is coming to a close this week. We have developed ideas about characters and discovered the themes. We are learning how to cite text evidence, and we have been discussing the importance of that evidence. We have been writing about our reading to really help solidify our thoughts. Many students are on their second or third realistic fiction book in this unit! That is amazing! I am so proud of their hard work in this unit.
Math:
We are well underway in our math unit and workshop model. We have been working in small groups to understand concepts and challenge ourselves. We have been working on place value. On Friday, we took our mid-unit assessment, and we will be going over it on Wednesday. We have made so much progress this unit, and we have really been enjoying rotations with our peers.
Inquiry:
We are coming to an end with our first unit of inquiry. This past week we applied our knowledge of values, community, and culture to create a collage that represents ourselves as a learner. We brainstormed symbolic and literal symbols to represent all three. We used our creativity and reflection skills to create these items. We will begin our final project this week. We are doing a show and tell on one of the three elements we have been studying: a value, community, or culture. We have three options to express our learning. I cannot wait to see what students do next! We will begin our next unit on the 15.
We have been so busy, but these past six weeks have been very powerful. Students even noticed that our reading bulletin board is overflowing with all the new knowledge we have acquired. I am beyond lucky to be teaching your fabulous students. We are coming together as a community of learners, and I know that this year will only continue to grow.
